Session 4: Continuum of care: definitive & rehabilitation care
You are invited to join us for the fourth session of the webinar series "Ending childhood burns in Africa: A regional call to action."
Session title: Continuum of care: Definitive and rehabilitation care
Date: 18 June
Time: 12:00-13:30 GMT (12:00-13:30 Brazzaville)
Format: Online (Zoom)
This webinar series is the continuation of a partnership between The George Institute for Global Health and the World Health Organization Regional Office for Africa, bringing together researchers, policymakers, clinicians, and practitioners to advance a coordinated response to childhood burns across Africa.
Building on earlier sessions covering burden, prevention, and early response, this fourth session turns attention to what happens after survival. Across Africa, many children living with burn injuries face long-term physical, psychological, and social consequences, often with limited access to rehabilitation and mental health support.
The session will explore:
- Strengthening continuity of care from acute treatment through long-term recovery and reintegration
- Rehabilitation as an essential component of burn care and health systems strengthening
- Psychosocial support and mental health needs of burn survivors and caregivers
- Survivor-centred approaches that place lived experience at the heart of care design
- Workforce development, service delivery models, and community-based approaches to rehabilitation
- Improving equity and access to comprehensive burn care across diverse settings
Speakers include:
- Binta Sako - World Health Organization
- Alberta Amissah Nyarko - Interburns
- Chiara Retis - WHO AFRO
- Chido Rwafa Madzvamutse - WHO AFRO
- Judith Cato Addison - Beyond Burns International
Join us as we explore how rehabilitation, psychosocial support, and survivor-centred approaches can strengthen burn care systems because survival alone is not enough; recovery, dignity, and reintegration must also be part of the response.
