Maoyi Tian is a honorary senior fellow working in The George Institute China. He received his Bachelor of Electronic Engineering from University of York, UK and his MSc of Biomedical Engineering from University of Oxford, UK.

He graduated with his PhD in Biomedical Engineering from University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia. He is currently a MPhil candidate in Epidemiology in The University of Sydney. His main research focus is using mobile health and health technology for chronic disease management and prevention in the primary care setting, particularly the integration of the mobile health or health technology into the existing health care system.

Christine Jenkins is Program Head, Respiratory at The George Institute for Global Health; Professor of Respiratory Medicine at UNSW Sydney and Clinical Professor in the Concord Clinical School, University of Sydney.

Christine has been Principal Investigator and has led many investigator-initiated and competitively funded clinical trials in airways disease. Christine recently retired from clinical practice but continues to teach and supervise medical students and higher degree postgraduate students. She has had major roles in advocacy and leadership for lung health in Australia, most recently chairing Lung Foundation Australia, where she continues as a director, and previously chairing the National Asthma Campaign and the Federal Government’s National Asthma Advisory Group. She has participated in many government advisory groups and guidelines and implementation initiatives to enhance resources, skills, capacity and clinical outcomes in airways disease.

Christine’s area of research interest is the clinical management of airways disease and patient-reported outcomes in response to therapeutic interventions, and she is currently implementing trials in asthma and COPD management and pulmonary rehabilitation in Australia and Asia. Her current work has also examined the role of telemedicine in specialist care during the pandemic and she is overseeing an ambitious study to develop a digital application for primary care to improve the diagnosis and evidence-based management of breathlessness.

In 2002 Christine was made a Member of the Order of Australia in recognition of services to respiratory medicine as a physician, administrator and educator, especially in the field of asthma education. In 2022, she was awarded the Governor General’s Medallion by His Excellency General the Honourable David Hurley AC DSC. This award recognises significant contributions to charities during the 2020 and 2021 pandemic years and is in recognition of Christine’s volunteer expertise, generosity, and exceptional leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic as Chair of Lung Foundation Australia.

Christine is a member and previous president of the Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand, and a member of the American Thoracic Society, European Respiratory Society and the Asia-Pacific Society of Respirology.

Alta Schutte is a SHARP Professor and Theme Lead for Cardiac, Vascular and Metabolic Medicine at UNSW Sydney; and Professorial Fellow at The George Institute Australia. She holds honorary appointments at the North-West University and University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa. She is the Past President of the International Society of Hypertension, Company Secretary of the Australian Cardiovascular Alliance, and Co-Chair of the Australian National Hypertension Taskforce.

Alta is a leading researcher with extensive experience in clinical trials and population-based studies in the field of blood pressure, hypertension and cardiovascular health. She has been the Chief Investigator of several multidisciplinary studies, published >450 papers in the field, and supervised over 85 postgraduate students. She is Chief Investigator of several Australian-funded trials and is a NHMRC Investigator Grant Leadership Fellow.

She is involved in numerous international consortia, such as the Global Burden of Disease study, the NCD Risk Factor Collaboration, May Measurement Month global blood pressure screening campaign, World Health Organization working groups and the Lancet Commission of Hypertension. She is the senior author of the 2020 International Society of Hypertension Global Hypertension Guidelines. She is Associate Editor of the journal, Hypertension, and has received numerous international awards for her work, most recently the 2022 American Heart Association’s Harriet Dustan Award, and 2023 Peter Sleight Excellence Award in Hypertension Clinical Research from the World Hypertension League.

Anthony Sunjaya is a medical doctor from Indonesia and Honorary Fellow at the Respiratory and Health Systems Division, The George Institute for Global Health, UNSW Sydney, Australia. He is also an Honorary Research Fellow at the School of Public Health, Imperial College London and a Visiting Researcher at the Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospitals.

His research focuses on cardiorespiratory diseases, complex chronic diseases, primary care, and digital health especially the development, validation and translation of decision support systems, AI, and virtual care. He has a special interest in supporting universal health coverage, improving care, especially in low-resource settings and primary care through the use of innovative evidence-based solutions.

He is Chief Investigator of the Breathlessness Rapid Evaluation and THErapy (BREATHE) trial funded by the Australian Government Medical Research Future Fund to optimise the assessment and management of chronic breathlessness in primary care through implementation of a clinical decision support system for breathlessness across 40 GP practices in Australia building upon work during his PhD which was supported by the UNSW Scientia PhD program.

He is currently Chair, Primary Care SIG, Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand (TSANZ); Chair, Membership Committee, Society of Medical Decision Making (SMDM); Vice-Chair of the Digital Transformation Leadership working group in the International Society for Telemedicine and e-Health (ISfTeH), and Editorial Advisory Board member of the Annals of Family Medicine. He is also an active social entrepreneur and co-founder of BantingMed, a diabetes digital health startup.

He was previously President of Postgraduate Council UNSW and ASEAN Society UNSW, a delegate to the 2023 Group of 7 Youth Summit in Japan and has contributed to reports for the World Health Organization and Asthma Australia.

After completion of her Masters, Sudha started her career in clinical research at Clinigene International Ltd, sister concerns of Biocon. She has worked in clinical research industry for the past five and a half years and was part of George Clinical for nearly four years.

Sudha has had experience in working on academic trials and seeks to pursue higher education and training in public health research, especially in the areas of non-communicable diseases including mental health and injuries.

She is currently involved in a study where mobile-based technology is being used to provide basic mental health care to scheduled tribe villages in rural Andhra Pradesh. 

Maree is responsible for designing, leading, and delivering a distinctive and vibrant postgraduate, postdoctoral and future leader research experience at The George. Maree and her team provide management and oversight of ‘higher degree by research’ candidates, their supervisors, visiting fellows and work with the training team to co-ordinate postgraduate research training.

Maree also leads a program of research focusing on developing simple, cost-effective strategies to prevent depression and significantly improve the outcome for people with chronic disease.

Maree works one day per week as a Professor of Epidemiology in the Faculty of Health and Wellbeing at The University of Central Lancashire in the United Kingdom.

Anna is working as an Associate Project Manager working on the STARS (stroke) and STEPCARE (cardiac arrest) studies. Since joining The George Institute in 2019 she has worked as a Senior Clinical Research Associate on various studies, both in Critical Care as well as other medical fields.  Prior to her employment at The George Institute, Anna was a Clinical Trials and Research Coordinator for the Intensive Care Units at Western Health, Victoria.  Anna has also worked as a Clinical Research Associate for Orion Clinical Services (CRO) and as a Research Coordinator for the Gastroenterology Department at Box Hill Hospital.  She also has a Bachelor of Biomedical Science with Honors from the University of South Australia, a Postgraduate Diploma in Forensic Science from La Trobe University and a Postgraduate Certificate in Business Administration from Swinburne University.

Abdul Salam is a clinical and public health researcher interested in cardiovascular disease prevention. He is particularly interested in developing, evaluating, and implementing novel low-cost pharmacological interventions. He has experience in clinical trials, systematic reviews and qualitative health research. Abdul Salam has a Master of Pharmacy (Pharmacology) from the Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, India, and a PhD in Medicine from The University of Sydney, Australia.

Dr Kotwal is a clinical nephrologist at the Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney; Program Head of the Renal and Metabolic Division at The George Institute for Global Health and a Conjoint Senior Lecturer at UNSW. Her research interests include novel and pragmatic clinical trials and she is passionate about increasing clinical trial access for patients with kidney disease and personalised medicine. Dr Kotwal is the Academic Project Director for the GKPTN and the principal investigator for the Glomerular Disease Registry and Biobank in Sydney. She has expertise in translating research into clinical practice and in-depth knowledge of statistical techniques, epidemiology and clinical trial design.

Ben is a doctor from the UK and Advanced Trainee in nephrology who is completing a PhD at the George Institute. The focuses of the PhD is improving the outcomes and economics of treating chronic kidney disease with a particular interest in low-and-middle-income countries. Ben is also involved with the Affordable Dialysis Project – an initiative run by The George Institute to develop a system that can provide low cost dialysis to those who currently cannot afford it. He works as clinical advisor for this project.
