Sudha Kallakuri

Profile

After completion of her Masters, Sudha started her career in clinical research at Clinigene International Ltd, sister concerns of Biocon. She has worked in clinical research industry for the past five and a half years and was part of George Clinical for nearly four years.

Sudha has had experience in working on academic trials and seeks to pursue higher education and training in public health research, especially in the areas of non-communicable diseases including mental health and injuries.

She is currently involved in a study where mobile-based technology is being used to provide basic mental health care to scheduled tribe villages in rural Andhra Pradesh. 

Professor Maree Hackett

Profile

Maree is responsible for designing, leading, and delivering a distinctive and vibrant postgraduate, postdoctoral and future leader research experience at The George. Maree and her team provide management and oversight of ‘higher degree by research’ candidates, their supervisors, visiting fellows and work with the training team to co-ordinate postgraduate research training.

Maree also leads a program of research focusing on developing simple, cost-effective strategies to prevent depression and significantly improve the outcome for people with chronic disease.

Maree works one day per week as a Professor of Epidemiology in the Faculty of Health and Wellbeing at The University of Central Lancashire in the United Kingdom.

Experience and insights shared by health consumers (herein ‘consumers’) and communities is essential to our work, and our mission to improve the health of millions worldwide. The George Institute is working together with consumers at all levels of our organisation – including, but not limited to: advising our research leaders, executives and operational support staff on Consumer and Community Involvement (CCI) strategy and implementation contributing to CCI initiatives within our research programs becoming part of research project teams The George Institute, Australia provides infrastructure and support for consumers, researchers and other staff members. Anna Tippett

Profile

Anna is working as an Associate Project Manager working on the STARS (stroke) and STEPCARE (cardiac arrest) studies. Since joining The George Institute in 2019 she has worked as a Senior Clinical Research Associate on various studies, both in Critical Care as well as other medical fields.  Prior to her employment at The George Institute, Anna was a Clinical Trials and Research Coordinator for the Intensive Care Units at Western Health, Victoria.  Anna has also worked as a Clinical Research Associate for Orion Clinical Services (CRO) and as a Research Coordinator for the Gastroenterology Department at Box Hill Hospital.  She also has a Bachelor of Biomedical Science with Honors from the University of South Australia, a Postgraduate Diploma in Forensic Science from La Trobe University and a Postgraduate Certificate in Business Administration from Swinburne University.

Associate Professor Sradha Kotwal

Profile

Dr Kotwal is a clinical nephrologist at the Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney; Program Head of the Renal and Metabolic Division at The George Institute for Global Health and a Conjoint Senior Lecturer at UNSW. Her research interests include novel and pragmatic clinical trials and she is passionate about increasing clinical trial access for patients with kidney disease and personalised medicine. Dr Kotwal is the Academic Project Director for the GKPTN and the principal investigator for the Glomerular Disease Registry and Biobank in Sydney. She has expertise in translating research into clinical practice and in-depth knowledge of statistical techniques, epidemiology and clinical trial design.

Ben Talbot

Profile

Ben is a doctor from the UK and Advanced Trainee in nephrology who is completing a PhD at the George Institute. The focuses of the PhD is improving the outcomes and economics of treating chronic kidney disease with a particular interest in low-and-middle-income countries. Ben is also involved with the Affordable Dialysis Project – an initiative run by The George Institute to develop a system that can provide low cost dialysis to those who currently cannot afford it. He works as clinical advisor for this project.

Establishing consumer panels

The key role of Panel members at The Institute is to offer health consumer perspectives and lived experiences within the context of their respective the Institutes research programs. This provides consumers the opportunity to contribute to current and future research activities. Consumer panel members may also assist in identifying the gaps, barriers, strengths, and opportunities for improvement in Consumer and Community Involvement (CCI) within the research program. The George Institute for Global Health currently has three consumer panels: Brain Health, Cardiovascular Health, and Kidney Health. Role of consumer panel While each consumer panel has established its own processes, Panel member’s involvement includes: Input into grant applications and research proposals Providing advice and feedback on study design, patient-centred outcomes, and patient-facing materials Assisting with the communication and sharing

Consumer and Community Involvement in health research projects

What is Consumer and Community Involvement in health research? Consumer and community involvement in health research is about ensuring that consumers and community members have a say in the research conducted and that the research best supports consumer and community needs and interests. Consumers and researchers work together to provide the best value for, and have the greatest impact on, the wider community. Consumers can be involved from the very beginning such as forming questions and co-designing studies with researchers, and throughout all stages of the research process. What does it look like? Consumers can be involved at any stage of the research cycle shown below. The level of involvement will vary depending on the consumer’s role and the type of research study. Dr Mary-Anne Land

Profile

Dr Land is a Senior Program Manager at The George Institute for Global Health, where she leads global initiatives to transition the world’s salt supply to potassium-enriched alternatives. This work addresses the urgent global challenge of high sodium intake and its associated health risks, advancing innovative strategies to improve cardiovascular health worldwide.

Prior to her current role, Dr Land held several key positions at the World Health Organization. Including playing a crucial role in the development and implementation of the highly successful global cervical cancer elimination program. Her leadership and strategic expertise were instrumental in advancing the initiative forward, securing essential support and securing commitments for its implementation.

With a robust background in both hands-on program implementation and high-level advisory roles, Dr Land continues to shape and advance global health policies and practices.

Thomas Gadsden

Profile

Dr Thomas Gadsden is a Research Fellow at the Centre for Health Systems Science, The George Institute for Global Health, and a Conjoint Lecturer at UNSW Sydney. 

His research focuses on health systems strengthening, with expertise in discrete choice experiments, evidence synthesis, and evaluation. His PhD research examined the design of appropriate incentives for community health workers in Indonesia.

Tom has held diverse roles across the health sector, including as a Public Health Officer Trainee at the NSW Ministry of Health, Health Financing Officer for the WHO Country Office in Lao PDR, and Australian Youth Ambassador for Development. He also worked as a youth worker in remote Aboriginal communities. 

Tom has a strong track record of partnering with government stakeholders and has authored commissioned reports and policy briefs for Australian government agencies and the World Health Organization.
