The George Institute 2026-2027 Pre Budget Submission
The George Institute for Global Health appreciates the opportunity to provide a written response to the 2026--27 NSW Budget process.
In brief, we recommend restoring the CPI‑adjusted value of the Medical Research Support Program (MRSP) and strengthening federal research funding mechanisms to ensure NSW's world‑class medical research institutes remain sustainable. With every dollar invested in NSW medical research generating $6.40 in economic output, maintaining and enhancing this investment is critical to driving health, productivity, and economic growth for the state. Addressing the $150 million annual funding gap---which places up to 60% of NSW's independent institutes at risk of insolvency by 2030---is essential to protect jobs, attract commercial investment, and ensure NSW communities continue benefiting first from cutting‑edge discoveries.
The George Institute remains a strong supporter of long‑term, strategic investment in health and medical research. We welcome the NSW Government's leadership through the MRSP and urge continued action to restore its real value, advocate for improved federal infrastructure and salary support, and ensure research institutes can focus on delivering high‑impact innovations. A strengthened, sustainably funded research sector is vital to improving health outcomes, enhancing system efficiency, and ensuring NSW retains its position as a global leader in medical research and innovation.
