Submission on the National Food Security Strategy Discussion Paper
The George Institute for Global Health has submitted recommendations to inform Australia’s National Food Security Strategy, highlighting the need to centre people, health, equity and the environment in national food system reform. Drawing on research across food policy, healthcare innovation and Indigenous food and water sovereignty, the submission calls for a more holistic and health‑focused approach.
Key recommendations include:
- Prioritising nutrition, human health and environmental sustainability within the Strategy;
- Establishing cross‑sector governance and accountability systems;
- Ensuring clear responsibility and adequate funding for implementation. The George Institute also urges the inclusion of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander food and water sovereignty and genuine partnership with communities.
Further recommendations call for robust monitoring and surveillance, support for local and community‑led food economies, and the integration of innovative Food is Medicine programs that connect healthcare with nutritious food provision. Overall, the submission emphasises a whole‑of‑government, equity‑focused Strategy that delivers a nourishing, sustainable and resilient food system for all Australians.
