Senior Research Fellow (Global Women's Health Program)

Context and Role: The Senior Research Fellow will be passionately committed to improving the world for women and to kick start emerging areas of work in Women’s Health program in India, namely cervical cancer prevention and gynaecological health. The position requires strong team-based skills working across multiple sites nationally and internationally, while also requiring motivation and an ability to work autonomously with quick turnaround times on deliverables. 

Reporting Relationships: Directly reports to the Executive Director of the George Institute for Global Health, India with a dotted line reporting to Program Head - Health Systems and Equity and the Global Program Manager for the Global Women’s Health Program.

 Key Role and Responsibilities:

In collaboration with our emerging research partners s/he will lead the newly established ‘women’s cancers and gynaecological health’ research stream of the women’s health program, India.   

  • Responsible for conducting a ‘current state’ analysis of both the external landscape and current George Institute activities related to cervical cancer primary and secondary prevention and will develop and lead initial research, advocacy and capacity building activities.
  • The initial priorities are to identify key barriers to the introduction and scale-up of HPV-DNA testing for cervical screening in India, including an assessment of the availability of skilled clinicians to conduct pelvic examinations and stigma associated with pelvic examination that limits the acceptability of such screening programs among women.
  • Responsible for leading pilot and feasibility research to support the expansion of the program using a variety of methods and producing outputs including peer-reviewed manuscripts, routine and ad hoc reports, advocacy materials and other products. This program of work is a collaborative venture with The University of New South Wales and The Kirby Institute, Sydney, Australia.
  • Responsible for conducting a ‘current state’ analysis to understand the current landscape of gynaecological health research in India, initially with a focus on endometriosis but with an opportunity to broaden and expand and/or to focus in on areas identified as relevant and important priorities for women in India.  This program of work is in collaboration with colleagues at the Nuffield Department of Women’s and Reproductive Health at Oxford.

To accomplish this s/he will work closely with the Executive Director, the Program Head - Health Systems and Equity and the Global Program Manager for Women’s Health, as well as with other members of the Women’s Health team to;

  • Provide leadership in establishing, planning and developing a collaborative program of research in ‘women’s cancers and gynaecological health’ in India
  • Create a database of relevant global and Indian key partner researchers, institutions, movements, policymakers, state partners and funders in cervical cancer primary and secondary prevention in collaboration with the global team and research partners
  • Create a database of relevant global and Indian key partner researchers, institutions, movements, policymakers, state partners and funders in gynaecological health (with an initial focus on endometriosis) in collaboration with the global team and research partners
  • Contribute to local, national and international meetings of relevance and develop working partnerships and collaborations with the identified key stakeholders working within the field both nationally and internationally
  • Make recommendations for and draft a proposal (activities and outputs, timetables, staffing and funding), with a focus on collaboration and translation and including undertaking the necessary feasibility research, in ‘women’s cancers and gynaecological health’ research in India
  • Develop, obtain funding for, manage and coordinate pilot and feasibility research on cervical cancer prevention in support of the above proposal including the publication of peer-reviewed manuscripts in high-impact journals and reports
  • Contribute (in accordance with the Terms of Reference) to the global internal ‘women’s cancers and gynaecological health’ working group
  • Contribute (in accordance with the Terms of Reference) to the Global Women’s Health Program, Global Management Committee
  • Support the implementation of the broader Global Women’s Health Program Strategy at the Institute
  • Develop the capacity of research staff globally, including the supervision of students and other teaching responsibilities

Skills Knowledge and Experience:

  • Appropriate post-graduate qualification (Masters or Doctoral qualification) in Public Health, Epidemiology or a related subject in medicine or allied-health fields
  • Minimum 10 years of experience with NCDs or health systems supported by relevant peer-reviewed publications and a successful funding track record
  • Passion for and demonstrated experience in the field of women’s health 
  • Background and research expertise in gender equity and women’s empowerment 
  • Experience working in multidisciplinary teams, managing relationships with external partners and engaging senior stakeholders, including those involved with the women’s movement in India
  • Ability to work autonomously, with high-level direction and supervision from senior colleagues
  • Experience in designing and undertaking literature and systematic reviews and meta-analysis
  • Availability and willingness to undertake national and international travel
  •  Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Ability to see the big picture, yet still focus on detail
  • Ability to be flexible and adaptable in the face of changing organisational priorities and ambiguous environments.
  • Strong focus on the quality of work
