The George Institute’s food policy team work in Australia and overseas, to reduce death and disease caused by diets high in salt, harmful fats, added sugars and excess energy. The team does multi-disciplinary research with a focus on outputs that will help government and industry deliver a healthier food environment for all.
The Role
The successful Research Associate / Fellow will play a central research and co-ordination role in the Healthy Food, Healthy Planet, Healthy People Centre of Research Excellence (CRE). They will collaborate with researchers across Australia and internationally, and be involved in cutting edge research across the fields of nutrition, the commercial determinants of health, food system sustainability, consumer research, and health policy. The role will straddle The George Institute Divisions of Food Policy and the Commercial Determinants of Health.
This exciting position will provide exceptional diversity and the opportunity to be involved in multiple projects associated with the CRE and a range of other bodies of work relating to the commercial determinants of health (e.g., projects on unhealthy food, alcohol, tobacco, and vaping).
The successful candidate will be instrumental in (i) assisting the CRE achieve its goals and (ii) embedding the research processes and outcomes of the CRE in the activities of a wide range of other Australian and international organisations that are undertaking work in this field (e.g., other universities, WHO, WWF, GAIN, and CHOICE).
Duties and Key Responsibilities
- Qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis
- Synthesising relevant literatures
- Report and manuscript preparation
- Organising and contributing to high-level governance committees for the CRE
- Contribute towards building future projects and grant applications
- Regularly update study tracking tools and systems
- Manage effective communication with internal and external study staff and key stakeholders
- Adhere to all study protocols and participate in protocol training sessions as required
- Adhere to safety policies and study SOPs, as outlined by The George Institute
- Attend study team meetings and appropriately represent The George Institute and the study, at all times while located at clinical sites
- Other tasks as directed by the senior investigative team.
Skills, Knowledge and Experience
Essential
- Relevant qualification/s in health, science, or communications disciplines, including a Master’s degree
- Experience in data collection and analysis
- Excellent written language communication skills and ability to draft a wide range of documents
- Excellent organisational skills, having the ability to organise, take initiative, and follow up independently
- Methodical and systematic, with good attention to detail
- Proficient in the use of the Microsoft Office suite of products (including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook)
- Ability to be flexible and adaptable in the face of changing organisational priorities
- Ability to work well within a research team and excellent interpersonal skills
- Strong focus on quality of work.
