Dr. Devaki Nambiar joined The George Institute for Global Health India in November 2017 as Program Head – Health Systems and Equity. She has a doctorate in public health from Johns Hopkins University and has over a decade of research experience in over half a dozen countries and as many Indian states.
"In Australia, we are lucky to have one of the best health care systems in the world, but we still see major inequalities of health outcomes and access. I’m motivated by the idea that we can create a better system that is easier to navigate and uses resources more efficiently, so that more people can access services and the benefit will be improved health."
"My work focuses on how to prevent unintentional injuries, particularly in resource-strapped countries. There are plenty of interventions that could save lives. I don’t really like referring to ‘accidents’, because it makes them sound inevitable, which they are not; they are predictable and therefore preventable."
"People often wonder what it’s like to have to ask people for money, but I don’t see it that way. What I do is give people an opportunity that they can’t get anywhere else to do something truly transformational that will make them feel amazing."
