We have a new and exciting opportunity for a Research Fellow / Senior Research Fellow to join our growing Cardiovascular program.
The Cardiovascular programs of work primarily focus on the evaluation of strategies for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases. This involves the development of novel interventions, high quality and rigorous evaluation, and translation of findings into practice for Australians but also aligning with the WHO/ WHF in improving cardiovascular health globally.
The program activities involve conceptualising, evaluating and implementing novel CVD prevention strategies suitable for a wide range of different settings. One new area of focus within the cardiovascular program is within the cardio-oncology program.
A Research Fellow / Senior Research Fellow is required to play a pivotal role in growing the Cardio-oncology Program at the Institute, including the ongoing conduct of existing studies (epidemiological studies, clinical trials), as well as assisting in the development of new proposals.
Duties and Key Responsibilities
- Play a leading role in the conduct of Cardio-oncology clinical trials, pilot studies and data analysis
- Provide a consistent level of contribution to the research activities of the program
- Work with senior researchers in developing new study proposals
- Assist with the preparation of grant applications as required
- Take the lead and assist with data analysis and manuscript preparation
- Maintain existing collaborations and establish others as required
- Ensure that research being conducted is congruent with world best practice
- Supervise and recruit staff for the program as needed
- Supervise and mentor postgraduate students
- Remain abreast of developments in the related to the program that are relevant to the study and the Institute, providing a source of information to colleagues within the Institute
- Actively develop and promote the desired culture of The George Institute by ensuring all interactions, documentation and communication are conducted in a manner which supports the stated mission.
Skills, Knowledge and Experience
Essential
- Relevant health/medical post-graduate qualification, including a PhD
- Experience in statistical analysis, preferably with experience in STATA and SAS statistical software programs
- Experience in the development and coordination of health research projects and/or clinical trials, ideally in the broad area of cardiometabolic diseases (e.g. cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, chronic kidney diseases)
- Experience in writing both research papers and grant applications
- Proficient in the use of the Microsoft Office suite of products, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook and the Internet
- Strong problem solving, analytical skills, and strategic thinking
- Strong leadership and mentoring skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work well and flexibly i.e. autonomously, in small teams and with a wide range of varying stakeholders
- Ability to see the big picture, yet still focus on detail
- Ability to be flexible and adaptable in the face of changing organisational priorities and ambiguous environments
- Strong focus on quality of work
- Availability and willingness to travel.
Desirable
- Cardiology or oncology experience.
