Postgraduate Opportunity - Injury in adolescence: understanding the role of risk
Summary
This PhD project will involve working across multiple cohort studies examining risk factors for injury in young people.
Supervisor(s)
Professor Rebecca Ivers
Description:
Injury is the leading cause of death and disability in young people worldwide but there are substantial gaps in understanding of both risk and preventive factors. This exciting project will involve examination of data from multiple studies examining risk trajectories in young people, and predictors of injury. These involve two NHMRC-funded prospective studies examining trajectories in adolescents and young people; one involving adolescents in rural NSW (the ARCHER Study), and another a national study studying trajectories in young Aboriginal people (the Next Generation Study). Further work will include analysis of data from a newly linked data set examining risk factors for injury in 20,0000 young drivers. The work will contribute to development of new programs for prevention of injury in adolescents. The student will gain expertise in both establishment and continuation of prospective cohort studies with the opportunity to work with large, well established internationally renowned research teams, and will have the opportunity to lead high quality publications in key journals.
Eligibility:
Applicants should hold an appropriate Honours 1 or high 2A (or equivalent) undergraduate degree in a related discipline (eg Psychology) or a Masters by Research, with strong performance in data analysis. Professional experience in psychology, epidemiology/biostatistics or other related health discipline would be an advantage. Applicants must be Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents, or New Zealand citizens.
Amount awarded: Students will be supported to apply for competitive scholarship funding and may be eligible for a $10,000 per annum top-up over a period of three years (tax exempt).
