Dr Louisa Sukkar is a PhD Scholar at The George Institute for Global Health, a Clinical Lecturer at the University of Sydney, and a Clinical Nephrologist.

She completed her specialist training in Nephrology at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and Concord Repatriation General Hospital in Sydney being awarded the Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of Physicians in Adult Medicine in 2016.

Louisa's research interest is in understanding the epidemiology of chronic kidney disease its progression and complications, particularly in the diabetes population. Her research explores the determinants of health with a particular focus on processes of care of chronic disease and its relationship to health outcomes and heath resource utilisation.

In addition to this, she has an active interest in innovation in healthcare and medical education. She is actively involved in the MD research program and has been instrumental in the success of the implementation of the new MD degree at the University of Sydney. This has seen her MD student present the culmination of their work at the Australian and New Zealand Society of Nephrology conference and have this work published in the Internal Medical Journal of Australia. In addition she has directly trained and mentored internal medicine candidates preparing for the national entrance examinations for specialist training.

In the future, Louisa hopes to improve the lives of people living with kidney disease by working as a clinical nephrologist in areas of social disadvantage as well as continuing to undertake high-impact research that can guide chronic disease policy, practice and advocacy work both in Australia and globally.
