An estimated 1.5 million Australians are affected by diabetes. It is the fastest growing chronic disease in the country, and is on a path to become the number one burden of disease for Australians. Diabetes is also taking its place on an international stage, as our population ages and people move into more urban settings.
The George Institute addresses diabetes by looking at contributing chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease (CVD) and kidney disease, plus the rise of obesity. Rates of diabetes among 25 to 34 year old Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander populations are more than seven times greater than non Indigenous Australians.
The George Institute aims to address the reasons for this disparity and help close the life expectancy gap between Indigenous and non Indigenous Australians through ongoing targeted research projects and community outreach programs.
