Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health
Improving the health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander populations is a major priority for The George Institute. We focus on addressing high rates of chronic disease and injury within these communities. The community-led programs drive evidence-based solutions to help close the life expectancy gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.
Our work includes a driver licensing support program, developing individualised treatment for children affected by Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD), and initiatives to address the very high incidence of kidney disease among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander populations as well as looking at depression in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with or without chronic disease and understanding burn injuries in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children.
