    An Australian research project being conducted in remote north-western Australia will provide world-first data to help address the long-term effects of alcohol misuse during pregnancy. An overview of the Lililwan Project, published in the Lancet today, examines how the study will provide the first data from remote Australian Aboriginal communities on the effects of drinking alcohol during pregnancy, specifically the number of children born with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD), a range of life-long physical and developmental abnormalities.

    Chronic and critical conditions
    Senior Director of The George Institute for Global Health, Professor Alan Cass, today welcomed news from the National Health and Medical Research Council of a 2012 Medical Scholarship for nephrology trainee, Dr Amanda Wang. The announcement was made this morning by Minister for Health, the Hon. Tanya Plibersek. Dr Wang will study the impact of advanced kidney disease on musculoskeletal health.

    The George Institute for Global Health, which is today launching Phase II of the ACTION (ASEAN CosTs In ONcology) Study on the economic and social impact of cancer in eight ASEAN member states. The study involves approximately 10,000 patients who are admitted or receiving treatment for cancer at all stages in Malaysia, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam, and aims to compile existing, and generate new evidence to assist ASEAN decision-makers at different levels to make informed choices on cancer control policies and resource allocations.
